An Example of Genetic Kidney Disease:   My Family Tree

Hereditary Information

HNF: Genetic kidney diseases make up a group called Hereditary Nephritis.  (I have one of those many genetic kidney diseases called Alport’s Syndrome, or broadly termed  “HN”.)    They all have the same common denominator.

According to the Hereditary Nephritis Foundation located in Murray, Utah,  HN ... “is present and generally mild at birth.  Especially in males, HN gradually progresses to kidney failure (end-stage renal disease or ESRD) that is fatal unless the person receives dialysis treatment or kidney transplantation.”

“In some kindreds, affected males suffer ESRD as early as teenagers, while it happens at 30-40 years of age in other kindreds.”  In females, the progression is usually much more slowly.

PKD: The Polycystic Kidney Foundation states that “… (PKD) is one of the most common, life-threatening genetic diseases ... more common than Downs Syndrome, cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy and sickle cell anemia combined.  For patients suffering from PKD, cysts grow throughout the kidneys and eventually the kidneys fail.  Dialysis or transplantation are the only treatment options for kidney failure.  There is no cure for PKD.
